Our ever-popular Big Wild Sleepout is back! Come and join us for the ultimate closer-to-nature experience- sleeping under the stars, a camp fire, wildlife walks and stargazing. Suitable for adults and families alike.
Set up from 1pm onwards
Briefing at 7.30pm
Events begin at 8pm
Tents packed away by 1pm the following day
To celebrate this summer's wildlife, why not come and camp under the stars here at RSPB Lakenheath Fen?
We will be camping in the sandy area in Brandon Fen. This is a five-minute walk from the car park and a 10-minute walk from the toilets.
Bug hunting and pond dipping will be available from 1.30pm onwards. After we have pitched our tents and had a briefing, we will toast (vegan) marshmallows over the campfire. We will then have a dusk walk around the reserve to find out what goes bump in the night on the reserve. we will listen to the local bats using bat detectors and if it is clear, we will do some stargazing. Hot drinks will then be provided near the camping area.
The following morning, there will be an optional early morning walk around the reserve at 6am. After breakfast, we will see which colourful moths were trapped on the reserve the night before. Highlights may include seeing impressive poplar hawkmoths and elephant hawkmoths.
While the adults are taking the tents down, there will be a selection of activities to keep the children entertained. This includes more pond dipping and bug hunting, the chance to get creative with some craft activities and some games near the visitor centre.
This event is limited to 40 participants. Price includes all of the activities and reserve entrance fee for non-members. Price also includes breakfast on the Sunday morning, which will consist of a breakfast bap and continental breakfast.
We will use the contact details you provide when making your booking to contact you closer to the time of the event to discuss your breakfast choices. We will have a continental offer as well as bacon, sausage or egg hot rolls delivered on the day, for those who request them.
Please bring your own tent and camping gear! As long as we do not find ourselves in the midst of a drought in July, BBQ's and gas stoves are permitted in the camp area but must not be left unattended. Water buckets are available. Toilets will be open at all times and are a short walk from the camp area.
