When the Rains Bring Out the aliguLi maNe

A specialty of this game is that it is traditionally played during the rainy season - Aati Maasa or Aashaada Maasa.

In Tulunadu and the Malnad regions, where it is known as Channe Mane, the game is exclusively played during the monsoons. The core of the community was - and still is - deeply connected to farming activities. During the rainy season, when farming takes a back seat, the community celebrates this pause by playing Channe Mane.

Until then, their Channe Mane sets are safely ensconced in the attics. They bring them down during Aashaada Maasa and play throughout the season. With just a single maNe (board), they have created many delightful game variations - changing the number of pellets, assigning different roles to players, and inventing unique styles of play. Each variation adds a new layer of fun and challenge, making the experience truly enthralling.

Just imagine a rainy day in the foyer of a typical Tulunadu home - playing Channe Mane over bisi bisi coffee and snacks.

We’re bringing a slice of that rich, nostalgic experience to you at our Experience Center on July 19th. Don’t miss this chance - register now for a memorable evening of tradition, play, and togetherness.
