Being a third-generation native of the island of Kauai, Jana Kitamura Martin’s musical upbringing blends her Japanese heritage with Hawaiian culture. In this workshop, she will explore the varied styles of Hawaiian musical traditions through a culturally informed lens and offer guidance on how to respectfully include music and activities from cultures outside one’s own. Participants will experience material suitable for all ages, along with pedagogical connections, ukulele arrangements, dances, and literature. The repertoire will include traditional Hawaiian music, music from other prominent cultures in Hawai’i, and Hawaiian-style covers of popular songs. Attendees are welcome to bring a ukulele or guitar to play along!

Whether you’re a seasoned music educator or just getting started, this workshop will leave you refreshed, inspired, and ready to respectfully bring diverse voices into your classroom.

✨ All are welcome—no NPKC membership required to attend!
✨ Bring your ukulele or guitar if you'd like to strum along!
