China in Black and White - Mengqing Nie (piano) with the London Youlan Qin Society
What sounds – and ideas – are sparked when Chinese folk melodies collide with the bulk of the western piano? This lunchtime concert weaves together two musical worlds through piano transcriptions and re-interpretations of traditional Chinese music, with a focus on rarely heard works from the period of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), which was pivotal in the history of Chinese piano transcriptions.
Featuring collaboration with musicians from the London Youlan Qin Society, the programme explores the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, showing how cultural memory can be reimagined through sound. Expect sweeping musical landscapes, unexpected timbres, and a journey that transcends time and borders.
All our lunchtime concerts have a £5 admission charge (UoB students and staff can attend free of charge, upon presentation of a valid UCard). The admission charge can be paid in advance via the University online shop page or in person on the day of the concert, via card payment.
Please note, we are unable to accept cash payments.
Doors close promptly at 1.15 pm. Latecomers will not be admitted.
The ticket link to purchase tickets in advance will be available here soon.
