Transformative Rhythms

This program offers participants an immersive, hands-on experience with the Dununs, a set of West African drums, Low, medium, and high in pitch, that are played with sticks and also combined with a bell. Participants will learn the history of West African rhythms and their foundational influence on music across various cultures of the African diaspora, including Haiti, the West Indies, and contemporary music in the Americas, culminating in Hip Hop.

Through playing dunun drums, attendees will learn traditional rhythms, experience the ability to transfer this and their own culture of rhythms into a musical dialogue, and be immersed in the power and energy of West African drumming. "Transformative Rhythms" will be delivered in two two-hour sessions. Each session will explore one to two different rhythms, delving into their history, cultural context, and technique.
