Led by Isaac Peetoom Heida
August 10, 2025, 9:30 a.m.
Jumpingpound Summit Trail
Difficulty: Moderate, 6.5 km, 400m elevation gain.
Expected duration: 3-4 hours.
The hike up to Jumpingpound summit takes you from montane forests up to a series of alpine meadows. Jumpingpound ridge is home to a long-term study on the ecology of wildflowers and alpine butterfly populations, and the research questions and findings will be discussed. Along the way, we will stop to talk about different kinds of wood rotting fungi, how trees grow to tolerate montane conditions, and why alpine meadows occur where they do.
Isaac is Ph.D. Student at the University of Alberta, where he studies grassland soil microbes. He is passionate about scientific outreach and loves to talk about plants whenever he gets the chance.
