New Class…Retro Durban Class - 6 spots of promotion for R495

My love for food sometimes reflects the longing I carry in my culinary heart. I was raised just south of Durban, in a town called Isipingo. There were many cafes and bakeries, a few hotels with the most famous being Island Hotel known for their amazing curries and bunnies, the Isipingo market, and the numerous strip malls lined with traders, herbalists, furniture stores and general dealers selling everything from TV Bar to actual TV sets.

The food in my hometown is something I will always remember…it was simple, fresh with great care taken in all the stages of preparation from selecting produce to getting the dhania straight out the garden to garnish. Cakes and bakes had to be the freshest either purchased or baked at home and there were often little parcels of something sent over made by a relative or friendly neighbour.

There was an overwhelming feeling of warmth and care and I feel a sense of loss and longing as we adapt to more modern versions of life. I find myself cooking more, sending out more care parcels sharing my love and recipes for everything delicious and homemade, entertaining more and with it comes an understanding of how far I exist from my true north.

Our store menu often reflects my sentiments with it’s golden oldie dishes. There truly is nothing like home food and with this in mind, I am delighted to launch a new Retro Durban cooking class giving our guests an opportunity to learn or just come along to take in that feeling of home and the feast that goes with it

On the menu…

Durban Lamb Curry braised with busting potatoes
Chicken Curry cooked bone in with double beans
Natal Prawn Curry in a tomato base simmered with a blend of spices
Roti

And for dessert…Snowballs just the way you remember them and probably the freshest ones you will ever have outside of home

There will also be a batch of wedding soji.

The class includes all ingredients and recipes and a full sit down meal where guests get to enjoy the feast prepared.
