Wheeling & the Water: A History of Rising Together in Ohio County, WV

For over 200 years, the people of Ohio County, WV have endured punishing floods—from the historic floods of 1762/3, 1884, 1936, and many others, to our most recent flooding in June 2025.
Floods have shaped our land, tested our spirits, and defined our resilience.

Now, we’re asking you to help us preserve this chapter of our county's history.

Writers from the local writing group, Wheeling Writers Round Up, will be on hand from 11 am-6 pm on Saturday, August 2, 2025 during Wheeling Arts Fest to help you tell your flood story.

Stories will be posted in a public forum in Wheeling Park's White Palace and then digitally archived by the Ohio County Public Library.

We invite you to read your story at a public remembrance that evening at 6 pm in the White Palace.
