MOUNT KEMBLA PIT PONY MEMORIAL RIDE 10.8.2025
Please join Keira Pony Club on their annual memorial trail ride. We will be riding from Farmborough Heights Rural Fire Brigade, up through the National Park along the Ring Track to Windy Gully, where we will lay a wreath in memory of the pit ponies who perished in the Mount Kembla Mine Disaster. We will have a picnic lunch, lay the wreath, then return via the same route in reverse. The ride is about 18 kms in total. Itβs preferable that horses are shod or wearing boots, however this is not compulsory. Riders under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Talk to us if you need one!
Date: Sunday 10.8.25 Cost $20.00 per rider (plus $15 for picnic lunch)

Start point : Farmborough Heights Rural Fire Brigade - plenty of parking , access via Bardess Cres Farmborough Heights (cross road Fairloch Ave)
Route: Travel up Fairloch Ave to join Farmborough Rd. Travel up Farmborough Rd to the National Park. Travel through the National Park for approximately 1.5 hours to Windy Gully and assemble at Windy Gully Cemetery on Cordeaux Rd for wreath laying , one minutes silence, picnic lunch and then return. Approximate walking distance is 18 kmβs round trip. There is a mix of terrain, through the National Park we will be travelling on the fire trail now known as the Mt Kembla Ring track which is a traversable road, rather rocky in places. Some of the route will be on gazetted roads, using the verge. Road rules of no more than two riders abreast, no further than 1.5 meters apart will be followed. This is a very short distance, on a quiet road. Very beginner riders may need to be on a lead rope in this section.
We expect to be back at Farmborough Heights Rural Fire Station no later than 3 pm. All riders will be presented with a souvenir ribbon of the event. Club polo shirts, PC appropriate helmets and footwear should also be worn. The ride will be postponed in the event of heavy rain, gale force winds, storms or bushfire. If the weather is just a bit damp, the ride will go ahead. You may like to carry a backpack with water, flyspray, sun cream and a halter and lead rope to tie your horse up at lunch time.
Lunch - as the facilities at Windy Gully are non existent, Keira will be supplying a picnic lunch ( and a portaloo) for $15 each. You are welcome to pack your own lunch if you prefer. Any parents not walking along are welcome to meet at Windy Gully around 11, Please place your orders for lunch via just go, limited snacks and drinks will be available for purchase on the day, there are NO SHOPS nearby, so lunch orders are strongly recommended or ensure you bring enough snacks /lunch of not ordering . Picnic lunch of wraps, ( vegetarian options included) and charcuterie, fruits and drinks. No hot food will be available.
