A Service of Word based on Amos 8:1-12

This week’s passage from Amos is something we might expect from a biblical prophecy: doom, gloom, and a bleak future of enslavement. And yet, there is still prophetic hope for readers who understand God’s character and Their Grace. But who, in the Ancient Israelite audience, might find hope? And who can find hope in it today?

Points to Ponder

With whom has God historically stood in solidarity? Is it to the group addressed in today’s passage?

How do we find grace and hope in passages like today’s?

In what ways do mixed-income residences help us to understand God’s solidarity?

Challenge

Commit to learning more about a marginalized group that Emmanuel supports. What is surprising or unexpected?
