EDINBURGH ZEUHL PRESENTS

BOB DRAKE will perform his irredeemably eccentric, but strangely brilliant songs that skip blithely across genre borders and hail from across his 30-year solo oeuvre. He’ll be playing electric guitar and singing about astronomy, anthropomorphic animals, wonders of antiquity, holy wells, uncanny happenings and more.

Perpetually reinventing himself, his evocative musings and inventive instrumentations come together to create a numinous otherworld like no other. A world full of twists and turns and a geometry that doesn't quite add up. A world built upon a breath-taking amalgam of broken rules and unimaginable musical logic. Adventurous, enlightening, and FUN!

Multi-instrumentalist / singer / lyricist and songwriter, Bob started playing instruments in, and recording bands in his native rural Midwest USA in the early 70's. In 1978 he moved to Denver, where he became a noteworthy figure in the local DIY / post-punk scene.

Relocating to France in 1994, he has engineered and produced over 400 albums by obscure / independent artists from around the globe at his home studio. Among others, he has recorded and performed with Peter Blegvad, Fred Frith, John Greaves, and Chris Cutler. Bob has been involved in a multitude of other projects including Hail, Thinking Plague, 5uu's, The Science Group, AA Kismet, Vril, NIMBY, Bing Selfish and the Multiverts, The Capybaras, and many others.

As a solo artist, he has performed at Cardiacs' Alphabet Business Convention in the UK, the Rock in Opposition festival in France, and played scores of solo shows in the UK and France between 2016-2019. He released his first solo album in 1994, and the most recent - his 23rd - in 2023.

Bob is presenting an unmissable programme at The Waverley where each song is its own world.

GEORGE BURT

A rare opportunity to see George Burt performing a solo set of free improvised guitar pieces.

As an experimental free improvising guitarist and a founder member of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (GIO), George Burt has played in a huge range of settings, and worked with Evan Parker, Keith Rowe, Fred Frith, Susan Alcorn and others. The orchestra covers a vast musical territory, from ancient musical traditions to modern technologies, and thrives on all kinds of musical interplay through free improvisation and deep listening, whilst remaining adventurous and playful at its very core.

George has penned a number of graphic scores that have been performed by GIO. His Improchertos, written on and performed from post-it notes, bring together all the fun and exuberance of free improvisation with the satisfaction of a composed structure.

His other collaborations include Tom Bancroft and Bill Wells in the improvisation power-trio Bill, George and Tom's Suburban Adventure. Together with Raymond MacDonald, they have been composing innovative jazz-flavoured music in Scotland for years, releasing albums with Lol Coxhill and Keith Tippett.

George Burt goes to explore areas of music where composition and improvisation are not easily defined or separated. From jazz-tinted pieces to more abstract and impressionistic pieces, he sculpts into sounds the seascapes of Scottish islands, prehistoric rocks and silences under the sea wind. Scratchy guitar passages are intertwined with snippets of folkish melodies evoking atmospheres of places real and imagined.
