Wilmington Historical Society Presents "Logging in the High Peaks"

The Wilmington Historical Society will present “Logging in the High Peaks” with historian Sharp Swan to be held on Tuesday, July 22nd at 7 pm at Up A Creek Restaurant located at 5545 NY Rt 86 in Wilmington. Logging historian Sharp Swan, who has spent more than 20 years looking for the last remains of the logging industry, will tell the story through rare pictures of the people who worked on the rugged Adirondack High Peaks slopes over a hundred years ago. Lumbering the highest mountains in New York State was a dangerous and precarious job, where everything had to be worked by brute manpower and horses. Deep snows, frigid winter temperatures, mountains over 4000 feet with 45-degree slopes, logging camps high in the mountains dozens of miles away from civilization, and swollen rivers filled with log jams, all made being a lumberjack a tough and dangerous occupation.

The ”Logging in the High Peaks” program on July 22nd, free and open to the public, is made possible, in part, by the Essex County Arts Council's Cultural Assistance Program Grant with funding provided by Essex County.
