An introduction to English medieval hammered coins: What was it like to use coins valued at their metal content, and not just as symbols of value? How were medieval coins produced, and quality controlled? How did merchants deal with foreign coinage? How did the English sterling become one of the leading currencies in Europe? We will discuss these issues and look at some period coins to see the evolution of English coinage from William I to Elizabeth I.
