This years Ice Cream Social is being held in partnership with the Bismarck Sons of Norway as part of a nationwide celebration of 200 years of Norwegian immigration to the United States. On July 4, 1825, a group of 52 Norwegians set sail on the ship Restauration to make the first organized migration from Norway to North America. Since that first voyage, about 900,000 Norwegian people followed.

Join us for lefsa, ice cream, hot dogs, and summer entertainment with a Norwegian bent, on August 10, from 1 to 4 pm. The day’s events will be opened by a display of the state and national flags by the Bismarck Am Vets color guard. Special music will be provided by the Grand Forks group Project Constellation. The husband-and-wife duo features guitarist Santiago Silva, who grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, and violinist Christina Silva, joined by friend and musician Jake Ingamar on slide guitar,. They will perform traditional and contemporary Swedish and Norwegian songs in the native languages.

A cut-out version of Norwegian artist Edvard Munch’s The Scream will allow people to insert themselves into his famous painting. Theo Art School will offer face-painting with rosemaling and Viking rune designs. A Name Your Dragon game will be available for people of all ages.
