“Club Tropicana, drinks are free
Fun and sunshine – there’s enough for everyone
All that’s missing is the sea
But don’t worry – you can suntan”

– George Michael, 1983

Drawing inspiration from a pop song that both celebrates and satirizes the surface of the party, we invite you to an exhibition where the glossy image reveals deeper layers. Art does not turn a blind eye to the world outside. On the contrary, it’s precisely in the tension between light and darkness, between escapism and confrontation, that art becomes meaningful – and necessary.

As tradition dictates, we’ve chosen an exhibition title rooted in popular culture. This year, it’s Wham’s iconic 1983 hit Club Tropicana that sets the stage. Not as a theme, but as a cultural signal – an image of what we long for, and at the same time, a subtle nod to the unease of our times – because not everything is as it should be. The fact that we've chosen a British pop song as the title for a show featuring primarily American artists may, in itself, be a commentary on a changing world.

“Club Tropicana – New Art from New York and Other Places, Part XVI” presents new works by more than 20 artists from across the globe. They are part of Gallery Poulsen’s strong international network and represent a broad spectrum of the figurative contemporary art that the gallery has championed for over two decades.

Join us this August as we open the doors to our 16th major summer exhibition – filled with international art, powerful narratives, and a welcome dose of sunshine.
