Lucy Higgs Nichols Learning Day

Spend an afternoon learning the true story of the inspiring and tenacious Nurse Nichols!
Lucy Higgs Nichols was a Civil War nurse who escaped enslavement in Tennessee, joined the Indiana 23rd Regiment, and settled in New Albany, Indiana, just across the Ohio River. Lucy was beloved by the soldiers not only because she cared for them, but she was also a great forager for medical supplies and food.
Join us at Civil War site Fort Hill to learn about regimental hospitals and see the tools they would have used. Then, compare them to today's medical supplies when you create a personalized first aid kit.
Hosted by Dr. Eileen Yanoviak, Kentucky-based historian and author of The Tenacious Nurse Nichols: An Unsung African American Civil War Hero.
Designed for 3rd - 5th grade students.
