"In the Buddhist tradition, the purpose of taking refuge is to awaken from confusion and associate oneself with wakefulness. Taking refuge is a matter of commitment and acceptance and, at the same time, of openness and freedom. By taking the refuge vow we commit ourselves to freedom."...- Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche

We are always taking refuge in something. What does it mean to take refuge in the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. That is, to become a Buddhist.

Join us as we explore this important step on the Buddhist path. We will examine the meaning of taking refuge in the Buddha as example, the Dharma as teachings and the Sangha as community.

The Philadelphia Shambhala center will be offering a formal refuge ceremony in November 2025. This class can help you decide if you are ready to take that step.
