Can court rulings help prevent climate collapse? International and local lawyers think so, and the speaker at the SCAN Hui, 31 JULY Waiorea Centre, Western Springs, Mike Smith, agrees!
Mike is a kaumatua of Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Kahu, and Climate spokesperson for the Iwi Chairs Forum. He has taken seven carbon emitting companies in New Zealand to court: Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited, Genesis Energy Limited, Dairy Holdings Limited, New Zealand Steel Limited, Z Energy Limited, New Zealand Refining Company Limited and BT Mining Limited.
He will be talking to us from the Far North by Zoom about the process and current status of the case.
This case is compelling and groundbreaking! Please note it in your diary and come to Waiorea Centre, Western Springs, 10am Tuesday July 31, to hear him, ask questions, and discuss the courts as a recourse in our campaign to save the planet for younger generations.
We will follow up with a discussion of a case being taken against the New Zealand government, challenging New Zealand's emissions reduction plan, and its use of forestry to offset carbon emissions. The case is being taken by Lawyers for Climate Action NZ and the Environmental Law Initiative.
See you there!"
