Lyric Opera of Melbourne presents the Australian premiere of Song from the Uproar with music by Missy Mazzoli and libretto by Royce Vavrek.
This 90-minute chamber opera tells the remarkable story of Isabelle Eberhardt a Swiss-Algerian explorer writer and mystic who lived a life of adventure and defiance. Disguised as a man she rode across the North African desert challenged colonial authorities survived an assassination attempt and embraced Sufi mysticism — all before her tragic death in a flash flood at just 27 years old.
The all-Melbourne cast is led by “commanding and captivating” mezzo-soprano Olivia Federow-Yemm, joined by Lisette Bolton, Leah Phillips, Olive Cullen, and Tim Daly. A live ensemble of Melbourne’s finest musicians brings the score to life, under the direction of Beng Oh and conductor Patrick Burns.
