In 1100, Henry 1st declared the area a Royal Hunting Forest. Now under the care of the National Trust the ramble follow broad, grassy rides, narrow paths and a section of the former Bishop’s Stortford to Braintree railway line. We pass the site of the Doodle Oak, Hangman’s Coppice and the Portingbury Hills Iron Age settlement.

Dogs: Please keep your dog close and under effective control on a short lead and please familiarise yourself with our Dogs on Rambles policy.
Nearest Town: Bishops Stortford 6 Miles 6.5 Miles Cat 2 Suitable as a first ramble
Surfaces: Mostly level, including section of boardwalk, compacted gravel, grass and woodland tracks. Can be slippery if wet and bumpy if dry.
Scooters: Suitable for all terrain mobility vehicles such as the SuperSport and Tramper.
