Writing to Wellness

Writing to Wellness is a 9-week, closed session creative writing group that is meant to be used as a wellness tool.

You're invited to join us:
- May 9 & May 23
- June 6 & June 20
- July 11
- August 8 & August 22
- September 5 & September 19

For Veterans in recovery, they can find it difficult to share their story because of the many stigmas associated with mental illness. Creative writing and journaling offer an alternate means of artistic expression that can be used to assist with the exploration of inner-self, without having to expose that inner-self to anyone else. When a Veteran writes down their thoughts and feelings, it affords them a filter between keeping those thoughts and feelings contained internally, or verbalizing those thoughts and feelings to others. The Veteran is afforded the authority of editing the experiences they choose to revisit, either through deciding what to include versus exclude, or through artistic style (e.g. similes and metaphors).

The Veteran is in control of their voice, with the endΒ­ goal of moving past their filter of non-verbal expression, and hopefully branching out allowing them to become more appropriately expressive with friends and family.
