Foundations of Faith: Early Churches of Lawrence

Freedom, education, and activism are strong influences in Lawrence’s dynamic, modern culture. These themes were also integral to its foundational church communities. Shortly after the New England Emigrant Aid Society founded the town in 1854, churches emerged to provide spiritual guidance and support to settlers.

These early churches helped Lawrence rebuild after Quantrill’s raid, worshipped together during the Great Revival of 1872, and supported each other during building campaigns and in times of need. Through images and artifacts, some of them borrowed from local churches, this exhibit tells these stories and more.
