Our 21 August speaker is Peter Laurenson, whose latest book AOTEAROA LIGHT: Moments of wonder and realisation in New Zealand wilderness reaches bookstores in August 2025.

AOTEAROA LIGHT takes readers on a journey through the wondrous and varied landscapes of Aotearoa/New Zealand’s wilderness, through photographs that catch the light, and experiences andreflections that explore our role within Earth’s connected ecosystem.

Peter has been a member of NZAC since 2002.

He is editor of the Federated Mountain Clubs’ Backcountry. He also writes for Wilderness magazine, and sometimes other publications including NZAC’s Journal ,FMC’s online magazine Wilderlife and the photographic community Excio’s magazine Captivating Photography.

During the past 30 years Peter has tramped, climbed and photographed extensively throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. The website www.occasionalclimber.co.nz showcases his mountain and travel adventures.

His other books are:
KHUMBU: Gateway to Mount Everest. Pathways to kinship, 2021, Bateman Books, mountain and
adventure heritage winner, NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival 2022.

OCCASIONAL CLIMBER: A Journey to Mount Clarity, 2013.

And at our club evening on 21 August he will share some of the beautiful images featured in his new book and talk about some of the issues placing all of this at risk.

Copies of Aotearoa Light will be available on the evening and Peter will be happy to sign them if desired.
