We are very excited to present 'Dido and Aeneas', arguably the first English opera and one of Purcell's masterpieces. Drawing on French, Italian and English models, Purcell created a work that was unique in its own time and which had few successors until the 20th century. Perhaps best known for the heartbreaking aria 'When I am laid in earth' ('Dido's Lament'), the work is notable for the expressiveness of its music, ranging in style from the delicate to the rumbustious, and for the very substantial part played by the chorus. We are presenting it in a concert performance, with soloists for the main parts and others taken up by members of the choir. We look forward to seeing you there!
Tickets £12.50 + booking fee in advance, £15 on the door. Full-time students and 18–25s half price, under-18s free.
