Strategy and skill are in order this evening, where any theming is purely decorative. It's all about the mechanics used and decisions made by the players. The strict definition of the genre excludes any games that rely on any element of luck.

Classic games such as Chess and Go are great examples. Modern examples include Santorini, Quarto, Hive, Patchwork, Blooms, Photosynthesis and Quoridor.

Purists tend to disagree but games such as the Azul series, Sagrada and Reef are often included in this category also, though some luck is involved in drafting.
