SPECIALTY WORKSHOP/ 2025 Fall Barrel Firing at Kettle Creek Pottery (4-part Class)

Join us for this wonderful alternative firing experience. In this workshop you’ll learn how to barrel fire pottery - a modified version of the ancient technique of pit firing.
Participants will learn to treat their pots with colorants, copper wire, and organic materials and more. After we treat our pots, participants will learn how to prepare the barrels for a successful firing. Once the barrels are loaded and lit they will burn most of the afternoon, when cool enough to remove, pots will be washed, sealed and ready to take home.
*Barrel fired pots are not food safe and will not hold water. Barrel fired pots are one of a kind works of art and can not be replicated.
9/25/25 - Clay forms building day (12pm-5pm) CLASS 1
Students will make 3-4 Forms, each made with Raku Low fire Clay.
Potter, Amy Manson will demonstrate a few techniques for building various forms
Come with ideas and photos references
10/24/25 (6-8pm) - Pottery Prep/Load the barrels CLASS 2
Meet Friday evening to discuss how to pack our pots with organic materials, colorants, and more.
We will learn how to load the barrel as soon as we finish preparing pots
10/25/25 (8:30am - 6pm) CLASS 3
Barrel Lighting and Stoking Shifts throughout the day.
All participants will sign up for a 2-hour shift and then can head home!
10/26/25 (12:00pm - 2pm) CLASS 4
Unload the barrel, Clean and wax pottery.
