A Service of Word based on Amos 7:1-7

While we might not have the religious idols that Amos and other prophets encountered, we certainly do have things today that distract from God. Sometimes, we might ‘idolize’ a person, or we might fall prey to idols of secular value like money and fame. But what’s at the heart of an idol? And how does the Holy Spirit invite us to return to a real, fulfilling relationship with God?

Points to Ponder
1. What is the significance of the first two visions God shows Amos? Why does God relent?
2. What is the significance of the final vision God shows Amos Why does God hold to this, instead of the previous two?
3. How do the symbols of religion turn into idols? Can we not just walk away from the symbols?

Challenge:
Look for God in the idols of today. Try to consider why a reasonable person might worship them.
