John McCoy: "Yellow Cattleyas of Today"

South Coast Orchid Society continues our 75th Anniversary Year with a program by SCOS Vice-President John McCoy on “Yellow Cattleyas of Today”, at Whaley Park Community Center, 5620 E. Atherton St. in Long Beach at 7:00 PM on Monday, July 28, 2025. We recently found a slide show from 1971 by former SCOS members Carl and Imogene Keyes, on the development of big yellow cattleyas. By that time, there were still no big yellows comparable with the purples and whites, in spite of decades of effort. Bringing the story down to 2025, we will try to understand why yellows have been so difficult. Are there yellows you can grow? What should a yellow cattleya look like? What’s your opinion? We will poll the audience! Orchids grown by members and guests will be on display. As always, the event is free and open to the public.
