Carapace for August: Do the Right Thing

Doin’ the right thing? Not always easy. It’s a lofty goal that gets harder and harder in this complicated world. Seems every decision we make has so many contexts, so many ramifications. Even going to the grocery store feels like a veritable trolley problem.

So, when was a time you found yourself in quite the moral quandary? Did you steal candy from a baby? Catch someone with a hand in the company till? Have to decide when it was time to put Aunt Margie in a home?

Perhaps it was a matter of overcoming your stubbornness, being the bigger person. Did you save face by conceding the point?

Maybe you decided it was time to fight the power like Mookie. If so, at the end of the day, did you find yourself standing in the smokey rubble with everyone clinging fast to identities, beliefs, or possessions?

Whatever your story of taking sides or living in the gray areas, we’ll be waiting for you at Manuel’s Tavern on Tuesday, August 12 at 7p, which always feels like the right thing to do, on the second Tuesdays of the month.

Come down early to join your fellow Carapeeps for a drink and some nosh, courtesy of the friendliest wait staff in town. As a reminder, there’s never any pressure to tell a story. We adore story listeners and storytellers alike.

STORYTELLING TIPS:
Plan your last line. A lot of times in personal storytelling, we think about how we want to start a story, but we don’t always think about how we’re gonna wrap it up. Sure, a great opening line—a real zinger—is super helpful. Still, thinking in advance about how you’re going to land your story is just as important. You wouldn’t get in the car without thinking about the destination. That last line is often where you might leave the audience with an embedded thought or a “what was learned.”

FREE STORY COACHING:
We tend to be at Manuel’s by 6p on the night of the show. If you’d like a little coaching as you prepare to get up on that mic, please feel free to arrive in the hour before to talk through your story’s points for some potential ideas or help with shaping it.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
We always need volunteers to make our events run like clockwork. Roles include:
*greet people at the door & encourage sign-ups
*keep up the tradition with timing stories
*be our personal paparazzi! (take photos)
Please write back to us here if you’d like to volunteer!
