The Life of Sir John Barbirolli- A lecture by Geoff Scargill

Courtesy of Goostrey Guild this fascinating lecture celebrates one of the 20th century’s greatest conductors: Sir John Barbirolli (1899-1970). Renowned for his transformative leadership of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester-which he famously saved from dissolution in 1943-Barbirolli’s influence on British music endures to this day. Visitors to Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall will know the striking bronze statue honouring his legacy.

This event will be led by the excellent lecturer and accomplished author Geoff Scargill, a recognised expert on British musical and industrial history. Geoff studied at Manchester Grammar School and Manchester University, graduating with honours in German, and has lived in Stockport since 1961. His engaging talks have delighted audiences on topics ranging from the life of Edward Watkin, ‘Victoria’s Railway King,’ to the music of Sir Edward Elgar.
