Join us for Professor Nigel Lucas's Inaugural Professorial Lecture titled "Molecular Materials by Design: Insights from Crystals".

About Professor Nigel Lucas's research
Nigel obtained his BSc(Hons) in 1997 and PhD in 2002, both from the Australian National University, working on the synthesis, structure and properties of organometallic materials. Following a short postdoctoral stint at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship hosted at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany. Nigel returned to Australia mid-2005 to take up an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at The University of Sydney where he established his independent research programme around the synthesis of nanographene-based ligands for controlling the molecular structure and bulk order of metal complexes.

Nigel joined the Department of Chemistry, University of Otago as a Lecturer in 2008, continuing to develop a range of novel carbon-rich organic and metal-organic molecular materials with a view toward optical applications, sensing, chemical catalysis and energy storage. Nigel has been an investigator in the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology since 2009, and He Honoka Hauwai (German-NZ Green Hydrogen Centre) since its founding in 2021. He held the Associate Dean (Postgraduate) role in the Division of Sciences 2020-22, before being appointed Head of the Department of Chemistry from January 2023.
