An essential concept of Buddhist philosophy is that, at the heart of our suffering, is our confused belief that we have a sense of self that is continuous and solid. In our struggle to maintain the sense of a solid self, we use 5 mental factors, called “skandhas” that we believe make up our individual self. By examining the skandhas, we find that the solid self is illusory, i.e., that the skandhas are “empty of nature” (Heart Sutra).
