Washington County Government invites the public to attend a sign dedication ceremony on Monday, July 28, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Sideling Hill Overlook and Rest Area, located at 2521 National Pike in Hancock, Maryland.

This newly installed sign was designed by Washington County in collaboration with Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) and celebrates the unique geological, historical, and cultural significance of the Sideling Hill area.

The Sideling Hill cut is one of the most dramatic man-made rock exposures in the eastern United States, offering a rare glimpse into more than 300 million years of geologic history. The new sign aims to provide a landmark for those—both local and from around the country—to highlight the areas role in regional transportation and history.

Washington County extends its sincere thanks to WCPS for their partnership in this initiative, which highlights the County’s ongoing commitment to enriching public spaces through community engagement.
