This walk leads us down to the Chelsea Sugar Factory. There is a lovely cafe once we get there for anyone who wants a drink or food and amazing views
About the path
Explore Chelsea Estate Heritage Park, a unique coastal reserve in Birkenhead that's home to the iconic Chelsea Sugar Refinery.
Start at the Colonial Road entrance to the park (car parking is available). You'll be walking mainly on concrete paths and roadside grass areas. The paths down to the coastal edge are steep but worth it for the views.
Don't miss the impressive sculpture by Bill Hayes. The artwork was designed from a ships 'grab' (mechanical jaws), that gathered more than 8.5 million tons of raw sugar.
Enjoy spectacular views of the inner Waitematā Harbour, Auckland Harbour Bridge and city centre.
The George Giles Walkway offers a short side walk down to Chelsea Bay, for more spectacular views.
