Illustrated Discussion: The Singers and Songs of the Lough Shore

Niall Hanna is a gifted traditional singer and guitarist from Derrytresk on the shores of Lough Neagh, County Tyrone. He comes from a celebrated singing lineage—his grandfather Geordie Hanna and great aunt Sarah Ann O’Neill were highly respected figures in the Ulster singing tradition, renowned for their powerful unaccompanied style. Niall carries that legacy forward with a distinctive voice of his own, blending heartfelt traditional singing with refined musicality and accompaniment.

His debut album Autumn Winds received critical acclaim for its sensitive arrangements and deep emotional resonance.

Through live performance, archive recordings, and personal reflection, Niall offers an intimate portrait of a landscape steeped in music, memory, and meaning—bringing the songs of Lough Neagh into the present with honesty, depth, and reverence.
