Jill Vance, Monroe Lake's interpretive naturalist, will present "The Mormons Come to the Salt Creek Valley," for the monthly meeting of the Lawrence County Historical Society. The presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. and is open to the general public.

In the late 1800s, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints began sending regular missionaries to the Salt Creek Valley region, a rural area of south-central Indiana that roughly stretches from Bloomington, south to Bedford, and then east to Nashville. This program explores the early history of this religious group, popularly known as the Mormons, through the perspective of people living in and around the Salt Creek Valley. We’ll explore why anti-Mormon sentiment developed and see how people often expressed their disapproval of this young religion through violent actions – and how it impacted one specific family living in the valley, the Chandlers.
