Octave Chanute Aviation Day

In 1896 and 1897, Octave Chanute and his team conducted experiments with gliders in the dunes along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, thus setting the stage for the airplane to come. Simine Short will highlight why Octave selected this area in Lake and Porter counties instead of experimenting with flying machines elsewhere in the country. A hike will follow Short's presentation, allowing a discussion on Chanute's learning to fly.
