Conservation Kōrero: Talk Toitoi To Me

They may be little fish in a big pond, but their growing impact has been sending ripples across Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne.

Toitoi common bullies have been translocated across three years from Kohangapiripiri near the Pencarrow Lighthouse to the Roto Māhanga Upper Reservoir in Zealandia. An endearing little ika, these fish are now thriving at Zealandia and getting spotted along Te Māhanga Stream, in Roto Kawau/Lower Reservoir, and downstream beyond the fence!

Central to the kaupapa of this project were the ongoing improvements to translocating the fish as we worked with mana whenua to incorporate traditional mātauranga Māori methods, and now, together, we want to share the whole story with you.

Join us for our next Conservation Kōrero, where a panel of participants in the toitoi translocations from 2023-2025 share the development of the translocations and the discoveries we made along the way.

This event will be held in the Pāteke Room in the Visitor Centre with light refreshments provided. Doors open at 5:45pm, parking is available at both our Visitor Centre and overflow parking area on Birdwood Street.
