SHOW INFO
PLOT SUMMARY
Oklahoma! is the landmark first collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, adapted from Lynn Riggs' 1931 play Green Grow the Lilacs. Set in 1906 in the farm country near Claremore in what was then Native American Territory, the musical follows farm girl Laurey Williams as she is courted by the charming cowboy Curly McLain and the menacing farmhand Jud Fry. A subplot centers on the comedic romance between Will Parker and his spirited fiancée, Ado Annie.
This groundbreaking show helped define the "book musical," where songs and dances are seamlessly woven into the plot to support character development and storytelling. This show blends heartfelt drama with humor, romance, and iconic American themes. Oklahoma! brings a fresh twist by incorporating country and bluegrass elements into the classic score, offering a musical experience that feels both nostalgic and newly vibrant.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Actors of all ages, genders, sizes, and ethnicities are needed. Age ranges listed are approximate and indicate the age to be played and not necessarily the age of the actor.
AUDITION SIDES:
All sides are linked below. An accent is desired but not required. The musical Oklahoma! is set in 1906 in the farm country of Oklahoma territory. Oklahomans' pattern of speech is categorized by linguists as a “South Midland dialect”
https://bit.ly/HSACOkAudSide
LAUREY WILLIAMS - Female, Soprano, 18–32
A strong-willed, independent farm girl with a romantic soul. Laurey is caught between her feelings for Curly and her desire to maintain control over her own life. She is sensitive but spirited, with a layered emotional range.
CURLY MCLAIN - Male, Baritone, 18–32
A charming, confident cowboy with a teasing grin and a heart full of love for Laurey. Curly has an easy swagger and a romantic streak, often expressing his feelings through song. Must have strong vocal and acting skills with leading-man charisma.
AUNT ELLER - Female, Mezzo-soprano, 40+
The practical, no-nonsense matriarch of the community. Wise, humorous, and tough as nails, Aunt Eller keeps the peace and sees more than she lets on. A grounded performance with warmth and wisdom is essential.
WILL PARKER - Male, Tenor, 18–32
A lovable, enthusiastic cowboy who’s head-over-heels for Ado Annie. Will is optimistic and a bit naïve, but full of energy and charm. A strong singer and physical comedian, dance experience is a plus.
JUD FRY - Male, Baritone, 18–32
A dark, brooding hired hand on Laurey’s farm. Misunderstood and socially isolated, Jud's obsession with Laurey reveals the dangerous edge of his loneliness. Requires a powerful presence and strong dramatic skills.
ADO ANNIE CARNES - Female, Soprano, 18–32
A flirtatious, funny, and unapologetically honest young woman who “cain’t say no.” Ado Annie’s heart is big—even if it tends to be given away a bit too freely. Excellent comedic timing and a bold personality are key.
ALI HAKIM - Male, Speaking/Singing Role, 18–35
A fast-talking peddler who claims to be from Persia with a quick wit and a knack for getting into (and out of) trouble. Ali brings comic relief and should be played with sly charm and physical comedy flair.
GERTIE CUMMINGS - Female, Alto or Soprano, 18–32
A local girl with an unmistakable (and hilarious) laugh, Gertie has her eyes set on Curly. A small but memorable comic role.
ANDREW CARNES - Male, Tenor, 40+
Ado Annie’s protective and blustery father. Quick-tempered and set in his ways, but also funny and full of frontier pride. A great character role with comic punch.
CORD ELAM - Male or Female, Speaking Role
The town’s Federal Marshal, who officiates the legal hearing near the end of the show. Dry, level-headed, and authoritative.
ENSEMBLE (All voice types, children (10 yrs +), teens, and adults)
Farmers, cowhands, townsfolk, and dancers who bring the Oklahoma Territory to life. This ensemble plays a vital role in storytelling through singing, acting, and dance, especially in the dream ballet and group numbers.
