Built as a school exclusively for miner’s children in 1881, Croxdale school was a big part of this local community.
27 people died in the nearby colliery, with many of the children at the school finding out that a parent had died once they’d gone home.
There are also stories of children dying of illness within this building. At a time when parents had to pay for a child’s funeral if they died at home, but the state paying for it if they died at school, some parents allowed their sick children to remain at school if they became severely ill in case they passed. There is even a room in the school where it is believed a child’s body was kept.
