"With improbable finesse it buffs up some of the oldest tropes of storytelling and then gives them a mischievous tilt, so that we appear to be watching a celebration of a genre and a sneaky subversion of it at the same time."—Anthony Quinn, Independent (UK)

"Shrek is alive, and with dark, sly and absolutely hilarious irreverence lampooning every once-sacred characteristic of the nursery kingdom."—Alexander Walker, London Evening Standard

"The brilliance of the voice work, script, direction and animation all serve to make Shrek an adorable, infectious work of true sophistication."—Jami Bernard, New York Daily News

Once upon a time, in a swamp far far away, there lived an ogre named Shrek (Mike Myers) whose precious solitude is interrupted by an invasion of annoying fairytale characters that have been banished from their kingdom by Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). Determined to save his home, Shrek makes a deal: the displaced fairytale characters can return home upon the delivery of the beautiful Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), who lives in a castle guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. Shrek and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) set out on their mission, but Princess Fiona has a secret that may complicate things.
