STUDY HALL SEMINAR: THE ART OF SPECULATIVE FICTION

What makes fictional places feel real? Why do certain characters stay with us long after the story ends? Led by writer and professor Jen Howard, this four-part course will examine how writers and artists construct imagined worlds that resonate deeply with our real lives.

Through readings, discussion, and explorations of speculative genres (fantasy, sci-fi, and magical realism), we'll consider how world-building reflects cultural values, how alternate futures critique the present, and how fictional characters reframe the human experience.
