Join us for book club on July 27th at 3 for the Northwest Yarns & Mercantile Book Club! This month we are reading Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao, a science fiction novel blending mecha, aliens, and Chinese history and culture to create a story that has been nominated for two Locus Awards.
In Huaxia, boys dream of fame by piloting Chrysalises, giant robots used to battle huge aliens beyond the Great Wall. To do this, they must pair with girls as co-pilots, who often die from the mental strain. But when 18-year-old Zetian signs up to be a concubine-pilot, it's not for glory, it's for revenge against the pilot responsible for her sister's death. She soon finds out she’s an Iron Widow, able to drain men’s power instead of the other way around. Paired with the feared Li Shimin, Zetian is done playing by the rules. She plans to use her power to fight the system that uses and kills girls like her.
