By using four old ledgers of the late 17th century, belonging to three prominent Long Island families all within the Township of Brookhaven, a story can be told about early shore whaling days off the Great South Beach, todayβs Fire Island. Shore whaling involved many Native American Unkechaug people who are listed in the ledgers. It also was the beginning of the demise of the North Atlantic Right Whale. Come listen to a long-forgotten story of interactions between settlers and indigenous people. Narrated by MaryLaura Lamont, Yaphank Historical Society Board Member and Naturalist.
