Artist Bio:

Edward Friebert 1905-1998

His father was Emanuel – changed to Edward – who arrived via Ellis Island in 1900 from Hungary. His mother was Hermine Hahn, from Senice (now in Slovakia)

He was born in Newark, New Jersey as Eddie Freberg in 1905.

He married Gertrude Ruth Garber, in 1930. She passed away in 1992. They had 3 children: Stuart Friebert (1931-2020), Phyllis Levy (1938-2025), and Steve Friebert (1945-present). He and his wife lived in Milwaukee for most of their adult lives, and they had 3 grandchildren: Sarah Friebert (Rita), and Steve Friebert (Naomi; son Kazu), and Jennie Levy Harris (Matt; sons Jack and Sam). He retired from being a pharmacist in 1972.

After retirement, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, on the advice of his brother, Joseph, a renowned artist (painter). He was in the art department doing ceramics. He remained there as a student and a teacher until 1988 when he quit to take care of his wife. (though he never quit the pottery wheel in the basement).

He began doing other artwork besides ceramics during that period and continued it after leaving the University. The carnival was created in the mid-late 1980s.

Edward created a visual display (like the carnival) of his vision of the liberation of Auschwitz which was accepted into the permanent collection of the Holocaust Resource Center of the Jewish Community Center of Milwaukee in 1998.
