Stars and Galaxies Night Vigil at Battlesteads Observatory 11-13th July 2026
Advertisement
A start in Derby this time where we ride past a piece of forgotten history - the home of John Flamsteed - Britains first Astronomer Royal back in the 1600’s! He discovered Pluto and engineered the measurement of time !!
Then we head north with stops and references relevant to our star studded tour - and of course refreshment and fuel stops.
Our accommodation up north is Battlesteads Hotel in Wark - the only hotel in Britain that has it’s own Observatory at the end of it’s garden! Being in a ‘dark skies’ location lends itself to fantastic star gazing opportunities and no more so than on 13th July 2026 when the sky will be at its darkest - allowing us to check out the most distant of galaxies and suspended entities out there in our Universe. It is also the start period of the Perseids Meteor Shower !
The observatory has a very powerful telescope through which you can see absolutely mind blowing images !!
On the Sunday we will ride out on a themed Roman Day - checking out Hadrians Wall and some of the forts that scatter the landscape. More than that there are ruins of ancient altars and areas of sacrifice to visit … if you want to. OR we can visit Kielder Forest or ride the causeway across to Holy Island for lunch (tides accommodating).
More star gazing (weather permitting) on Sunday night - or a walk to the other hostelry in the village?
Riding home on Monday we might drop in to Jodrell Bank - a seriously BIG telescope - and learn more about our amazing Universe! 🤩🤩
