The Field - Ballaghaderreen Players

Ballaghaderreen Players are thrilled to return to Westport Townhall Theatre this summer with one of Ireland’s best known plays; John B. Keane’s The Field directed by Julie Sharkey. Set in 1965 Ireland. The story is as old as the world. The Bull McCabe has spent five hard years labour cultivating a small plot of rented land. Nurturing it from barren rock into a fertile field. When the owner of the field decides to auction it, the Bull believes he has claim to it. But Galwayman William Dee arrives from England where he has lived for many years, with a plan to cover the field with concrete and extract gravel from the adjacent river. The Bull is pushed to fight for what he believes is rightfully his. This story burrows deep into the heart of rural Ireland. At its core is the enduring link between the Irish people and the land.
