Directed by John Combs, Monday, June 30 at 7:00pm

Set in a fashionable New York home during the 1850s, The Heiress is based on a true story, fictionalized by Henry James in his 1881 novel, Washington Square. Plain Catherine Sloper, who lives a spinster’s life with her unloving father and eccentric aunt, is courted by the dashing Morris Townsend, seemingly for love and not for money. When Catherine falls in love with the handsome suitor, her father threatens to disinherit her, convinced that the young man could only be interested in Catherine’s fortune. Though set in the 19th century, The Heiress is surprisingly modern. The play is a subtle and emotionally charged psychological portrait of three well-meaning but doomed individuals looking for happiness—a superb study of the nature of love and missed opportunities.
