"Immediate - Intimate" - A Trio of artists - exploring the visceral experience of the everyday. One perspective on this suggests a hint of the sublime in the mundane, where routine is broken by a sliver of wonderment. A different interpretation refers to the intimacy of the familiar itself.

In either case it connotes a profound spatial and temporal connection to self.

Within this, each artist examines quite different archetypes of nature and humanity, drawing out the immediately familiar indelibly bound to the lens through which these three artists see and understand the world.

Artist Statements:

Justine Wahlin

Justine’s take on Immediate – Intimate stems from a precious catalogue of implosive moments forged into memory, where celestial nature spontaneously aligned with earth and flesh to momentarily flash splitting truth...good and bad, extraordinary and ordinary.
The light through a blade of grass, the crackle of feet on gravel, the stars through the windscreen of a speeding car, a long-lost homeland emerging from the deck of the ferry, ordinary words arranged to reveal a transformative new possibility.
Her exploration of this theme through varied styles is held together tightly as a string of poignant and potent moments expressed in abstract forms and vibrant colour.

Sharon Lees
Sharon’s take on Immediate Intimate is an exploration of the visceral experience of the everyday; from a hint of the sublime in the mundane to the intimacy of the familiar itself. She attempts to evoke the feeling of these random connections in the spaces we inhabit. This resonance is explored in both a literal sense, through figurative work, and a distilled sense in abstract works.

Peter Fenwick
Peter Fenwick’s take on Immediate Intimate is inspired by the modern metamorphosis of the classic Australian club, the changing face of its patronage and its ceremonial rituals. A cast of characters dancing to the timeless chants; ‘Come on down for a Schnitty and Chips with the grand kids, ‘Donate a few coins to the local Netball team and try your luck with a few raffle tickets…‘or sell some meth in the pokie den and do a few lines on the toilet seat.’
With a dash of surrealism, colour and stretched perspective Peter creates a story we can all relate to. A humorous yet stark observation of people in a unique habitat were patterns and archetypes repeat…Both the faces and the carpet. You’ll surely be reminded of someone you’ve met before.
With this unique mix of socially accepted (and unaccepted) practices, Peter captures the mundane madness of the local club experience. He uses watercolour pencils to bring vibrant scenes to life and precision felt pens to carve out the many characters who call these microcosms their playground. @/fenwicked1
