Five Leaves Irish Book Group discusses Mouthing, by Orla Mackay

Well, our fiction book group discussed this Irish book, now it is the turn of the Irish book group!

Ballyrowan, 1963 onwards, a cast of characters, in a village where people talk, reveal secrets and hide them too.

Why did Sister Catherine organise for her friend to take herself off to America, and what happened to the Irish woman she lodged with? Did you hear about the man who brought his cow into his house, and whose sister went to work for the priest, and what happened to the pair of them? And poor Joan, her mother couldn’t look after her – the little goose, taught how to fly by her neighbour Julia who took her in.

There are plenty Ballyrowans: where life in those little places die, greater places share their loss.

Mouthing is written in English, but with an Irish register and a scattering of Irish words.

Refreshments provided. All you have to do is read the book and take part in the discussion. You can source the book wherever you like – libraries are good! – but it’s 15% off at our place until the event. You don’t have to be Irish to attend and you can attend as many or as few of our evenings as you like. There’s no set membership. We meet monthly.

Five Leaves Irish Book Group is one of four we run, fiction, non-fiction, Pagan being the others.

The illustration above is of the original cover of the book – the current one is here. Now there’s a talking point already.
